Packaging design for a DIY Lava Lamp Kit for children
Bioluminescence
/ˌbʌɪə(ʊ)luːmɪˈnɛs(ə)ns/
noun
The biochemical emission of light by living organisms such as glow-worms and deep-sea fish

I SEA LIGHT is a DIY Lava Lamp kit for children aged 5 to 12 to learn about Bioluminescence in marine animals in a simple yet fun, visual manner. The kit fulfills the logistical aspect of a workshop for children that is an extended part of a hypothetical bigger exhibition on Bioluminescence from a previous project. During the workshop, the kit serves to allow the children to create their own tiny bioluminescent marine world in the form of a lava lamp after having learnt about the phenomenon in a fun and engaging way.

Each kit contains x1 plastic jar, x4 food colouring, x1 LED light and a bunch of mini acrylic animals. Other ingredients that are essential to the creation of the lava lamp will be provided by the workshop volunteers or available at own homes if parents were to purchase the kit home. (*note that because this project was made during the COVID-19 pandemic, the actual items were not available for purchase thus I only included a drawing of the contents to aid visualisation of the whole kit)

A lit lava lamp is a simple and fun way to emulate bioluminescence in the sea. The glowing effect of the oil and water allows children to visualise the concept of light under water. Upon addition, the acrylic animals will be lit up and creating movement inside the lava lamp as they float around, perfectly representing the phenomenon in motion.
